In response to a Freedom of Information Law request from a local resident, the Skaneateles Central School District has released 16 pages of documents relating to the recent investigation into charges of illegal recruitment and residency in the high school varsity football program.
The documents ― the report to the school board by the district’s law firm concerning the investigation, the summary of the private investigator hired by the district, and a sworn statement from a former high school athlete about being recruited ― reveal numerous details about an issue that divided the town and ultimately cost the undefeated Lakers a chance at a state title.
The investigation report, although heavily redacted for privacy issues, contains detailed information about the extent of the investigation and the facts discovered concerning the alleged recruitment and residency violations. These details were never presented by the school board at public meetings due to privacy concerns of the individuals involved, although most of the general issues previously have been published in local media outlets.
