Three different win streaks helped the Baldwinsville wrestling team keep the upper hand against its neighbors from Liverpool.
But it was the last of these win streaks that was the most vital, as it allowed the trailing Bees to zoom in front and topple the visiting Warriors 41-31 on Wednesday night.
Four matches remained and B’ville was behind 27-25. Then, in the 106-pound category, Kevin Paul went out and pinned Liverpool’s Peter Nash in 1:16, followed by Tim Sposato (113 pounds) pinning Sam Marleau 18 seconds into the second period.
Now with a 37-27 lead, the Bees could clinch matters just by holding the Warriors to a decision, but Jabr Bengabr (120 pounds) did far better, routing Anthony Ianno 13-2. Though Chad McArdell (126 pounds) lost the finale to Emir Hadzic 5-2, B’ville had clinched it.
Early in the meet, B’ville was down 6-0 when Jake Norton, at 138 pounds, routed Casey Guilfoil 14-3, and Steve Petrelli (145 pounds) was just as impressive in a 13-5 win over Darren Breen.
At 152 pounds, Ryan McArdell maintained the Bees’ momentum, pinning Nate Smith in 1:40, and Anthony Rafkis (160 pounds) made it four in a row when he shut out Mende CuKalevski 5-0.
Liverpool won the next two contests. Pat Nasoni (189 pounds) watched his brother, Joe, get pinned by Joe Pizzuto, but went out and took just one minute to earn his own pin over Nick Leedom before Jacob Florack (220 pounds) beat Patrick Smith 11-2.
Forced to forfeit the next two matches, the Bees suddenly found itself behind, but Paul, Sposato and Bengabr provided the winning points. B’ville goes to Indian River Saturday for the North Country Invitational.
