Baldwinsville’s cross country team had a presence in both of the Class A races at Saturday’s New York State Public High School Athletic Association championship meet at Vernon-Verona-Sherrill.
On the boys side, junior Alec Peinkofer offered one of his best efforts of the season. Peinkofer ignored the early start and the muddy conditions on the 3.2-mile VVS course to finish in 17 minutes, 4.6 seconds.
This put Peinkofer in seventh place, less than a minute from the winning time of 16:28.4 posted by Fayetteville-Manlius junior Nick Ryan. The runner-up, Victor’s M.J. Erb, finished in 16:54.8, not even 10 seconds ahead of Peinkofer.
A bit later, the girls had their turn in the state Class A race, and that meant a chance in the spotlight for B’ville freshman Rachael Miller.
Though she certainly had some difficulties amid the high-caliber competition, Miller still took 84th place in a time of 22 minutes, 32.2 seconds. F-M’s Jillian Fanning, in a time of 18:53.8, prevailed over West Genesee’s Laura Leff (19:33.6) as the Hornets also claimed team honors on both the girls and boys sides.
