Throughout a long and exciting showdown Tuesday night, the Cicero-North Syracuse and Liverpool girls volleyball team tussled with each other.
And when it was all done, the Northstars had prevailed in five sets, only a couple of points separating the two sides as CNS improved to 13-1 and Liverpool fell to 10-6.
It was the Warriors initially moving in front, 25-20, in the first set. A close second set followed, and Liverpool was on the brink of a 2-0 edge before CNS pulled it out, 26-24.
Having pulled even, the Northstars claimed the third set by a more comfortable 25-18 margin and got within two points of closing out the match. But now it was Liverpool’s turn to rally, as it went beyond the wire to win that fourth set 27-25.
The final set proved just as close, each side with real chances to get that win before CNS, by a slim 25-23 margin, earned the victory.
Up front for CNS, Lindsey Silfer and Adrianna Patzer each had 13 kills, with Silfer adding 14 assists and Patzer putting up eight blocks.
Carly Rebecchi had nine kills and eight digs, while Jenna Tartaro had six kills and 12 digs. Amy Van Hoven fed all of them with 35 assists, to go with eight kills as she and Emily Becker both had 12 digs.
Liverpool had all kinds of strong efforts, too. Meghan Stonebarger, with 22 assists, and Katie Rowell, with 12 assists, worked on the back line as Dorothy Rosekrans led the front line with 15 kills.
Rowell added eight kills and three blocks and Stephanie Mumpton got seven kills, with Cassi McCrum and Emily Flohr adding five kills apiece. Alexis Hasper (three kills) and Jenna Bush (three assists) helped out.
