In the final week of its season, the Baldwinsville field hockey team continued to have offensive struggles against the top CNY Counties League foes.
For example, when the Bees went to Rome Free Academy last Tuesday night, it could not get on the board in a 2-0 loss to the Black Knights.
As in many other instances this season, B’ville was constantly playing defense, as RFA kept the ball in the Bees’ end. Lindsay Farrell made 18 saves, only allowing goals from McKenzie Guy and Kaysie Gregory, one in each half.
B’ville did get back to the win column Thursday, in a non-league game against Port Byron, where the Bees held off the Panthers 3-2.
Ahead 2-1 by halftime, the Bees stayed out in front by the late going as Shelby Woods, Paige Corso and Kayla Dubiel each put up goals. Kaylee Quanbeck and Brittany Marquez countered for Port Byron, but Farrell made five saves to help her side prevail.
On Saturday, B’ville played at home, falling 2-0 to Cicero-North Syracuse on Senior Day. Corso and Woods are the only two seniors on the roster, and they were honored in ceremonies after the game.
A year after winning the Section III Class A title, B’ville missed the post-season in 2011, but the return of a large and talented cast of players should give new head coach Sherri Davin plenty to be excited about next fall in her second go-round.
B’ville alum Briana Earle is a senior playing in goal for Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, helping the Engineers to a 9-4 start, averaging barely more than two goals per game with a .776 save percentage.
