Liverpool’s girls tennis team did enough, at just the right moments, to make it to the Section III Class A team tournament semifinals.
In last Wednesday’s quarterfinal against Whitesboro, Liverpool claimed the last point in a drama-filled tie-breaker in a 4-3 victory.
Already, Liverpool had seen Sara Noll and Alexandra Reilly come from behind to beat Elizabeth Davies and Kaitlyn Robertsen 5-7, 6-0, 6-1. Holly Glor and Melissa Inch handled Katie Daskiewich and Jonelle Orsaio 6-3, 6-4, while Caitlin Corrice and Katey Padden had their own 6-3, 6-4 decision over Sara Palczynski and Nil Patel.
With Kristina Monahkova, Nicolette Hamilton and Hannah Foster all beaten in singles, it rode on the final doubles match, where Monica Johnson and Sally Johnson met Whitesboro’s tandem of Kaitlin Bartczak and Jerrica Paulsen.
They split the first two sets, each of them 6-4 decisions as Whitesboro went ahead and Liverpool answered. The final set turned into a points tie-breaker, tense and exciting, and the Johnsons prevailed over Bartczak and Paulsen 11-9 to give Liverpool the team win.
And with that, the Warriors moved on to face Baldwinsville in the Class A semifinals, but had to wait until Monday to play that match due to two days of rain postponements.
