In its only action last week, the Cicero-North Syracuse girls volleyball team dropped a third set to Utica Proctor, but still took out the Raiders 25-23, 25-29, 24-26, 25-15 to remain undefeated.
Winning that opener proved important for the Northstars, for it gave them a cushion once the sweep wasn’t finished off. Adrianna Patzer had seven kills, with Cara Gannett adding five kills, three aces, three blocks and three digs.
Emily Becker had four aces and six digs as Lindsey Silfer managed 15 assists, four kills and four aces. Amy VanHoven put up six assists, plus two kills and two aces.
Liverpool’s girls team got humbled at home by Skaneateles 25-15, 25-8, 25-19 last Monday night. In defeat, Jenna Bush had four assists and Dorothy Rosekrans got seven kills, with Meghan Stonebarger adding 17 assists. Stephanie Mumpton put up four kills and four digs and Rachel Ruggaber finished with seven digs.
It proved different in Wednesday’s match against Fayetteville-Manlius. After winning the first set 25-20, the Warriors got dumped by the Hornets 25-12 in the second set, but won all the crucial points in the next two sets to prevail by margins of 25-23 and 25-21.
By the time it was done, Rosekrans had 11 kills and four digs, with Emily Flohr adding seven kills. Rowell did it all, earning 14 assists, six kills, six digs and two blocks, while Stonebarger had 18 assists. Cassi McCrum had six kills and Mumpton contributed five kills.
Liverpool lost the first set of Thursday’s match with West Genesee 25-17, and was in trouble in the second set. But once it won that set 26-24, the Warriors took over, winning the next two sets 25-15 and 25-16 to close out the match.
Rosekrans finished with 12 kills and five digs, while Stonebarger earned nine assists. Rowell had five assists, four kills and four digs, with Mumpton gaining four kills and Alexis Hasper adding three kills. Ruggaber added six digs.
Kicking off a busy week that included four different matches, CNS made sure it took care of Central Square last Monday night, beating the Red Hawks in straight sets 25-16, 25-22, 25-16.
Justin Collins earned 27 assists, adding three kills. Up on the front line, Billy Werksman (nine kills), Geoff Holmes and Joel Brousseau (eight kills each) evenly split the duties, while Werksman also earned five aces and three digs.
CNS also beat Central Square in three sets 25-22, 25-13, 25-18 on Wednesday night. Werksman mixed in eight kills, eight aces and three digs, though Holmes led with 10 kills and three aces. Collins finished with 24 assists.
Then the Northstars split with two non-league opponents. Against Horseheads, CNS lost the first set 25-22, but won the next three sets 25-18, 25-23 and 25-20. Holmes had nine kills and Brodhead got eight kills, with Brousseau, Nate Tyrell and Josh Rodriguez each getting five kills in front of Collins, who earned 32 assists.
Midlakes, however, would beat CNS in four sets 25-19, 18-25, 25-18, 27-25. The Northstars nearly pushed it to the limit, but lost as Werksman had 11 kills, with Holmes and Brodhead getting nine kills apiece. Collins managed 29 assists, plus three blocks and three kills.
As this went on, Liverpool ran into Baldwinsville, falling to the Bees 25-18, 25-17, 25-21. Dalton Horton, in defeat, managed eight assists and five digs, while Joe Kenney had five assists. John Milligan had three kills and five digs. Chris Valerino also managed three kills.
