All was supposed to be on the line on Friday when the West Genesee girls tennis team took another shot at ending the long win streak of Fayetteville-Manlius.
Weather issues altered the schedule, though, and pushed the match back to this Monday afternoon, where, weather permitting, the Wildcats would defend its 10-0 mark.
WG made it nine in a row last Monday, against Utica Proctor, again sweeping all the doubles matches in a 6-1 win over the Raiders.
Between them, the teams of Samantha Heyn-Allison Theberge, Taylor Ginestro-Marisa Joyce, Danielle Fofi-Caitlin Hawley and Kelsey Abdo-Nicole Baz lost just six games in eight combined sets. Also, Nicole Klinger routed Vicky Fam 6-1, 6-0, while Olivia Wolfram took straight sets in a 7-6, 6-2 win over Andrea Cvijanovic.
Then the Wildcats shut out Syracuse East 7-0 on Tuesday, not losing a set in any of the seven matches. Though Lauren Kesler and Sarah Plunkett got challenged in singles, they still beat Cecily Thomas and Vivian Truong 6-4, 7-5.
Marcellus started its week by blanking Jordan-Elbridge 7-0. Daniela Henie and Colleen Stapleton won 6-0, 6-0 singles matches over, respectively, Dylan Richardson and Ashley Hamlin. Haley Randall beat Emma Stanton 6-1, 6-0.
In doubles, Megan Charles and Marykate McHale had the closest call, still beating Judy Fixler and Brittany Olmstead 6-1, 6-3. The teams of Emily Hennigan-Renee Poullott, Holly Grosholz-Grace Hunt and Tierney Clark-Rebekah Mullins also won without dropping a set.
The Mustangs also took out Pulaski by that same 7-0 margin. Stapleton, pushed in singles, still beat Valerie Granger 6-2, 4-6, 6-4, while Henie and Randall both won in straight sets.
In doubles, Grosholz and Hennigan teamed to rout Emily Fellers and Shanika Scarborough 6-1, 6-1, while Hunt and Clark handled Atlantis Bananno and Kathryn Paye 6-0, 6-3. McHale and Mullins put together a 6-2, 6-0 win over Diamond Brossoit and Kathleen Kinney.
Playing again Friday, Marcellus beat Bishop Grimes 6-1, getting a sweep from Henie, Stapleton and Randall in singles.
The Cobras forfeited a doubles match, but the Mustangs still went 2-1 as Hennigan and Hunt beat Caitlyn Buckman and Clare Williams 6-1, 6-0, while Mullins and Clark teamed up to top Melanie Burke and Nicole Donati 6-1, 6-0.
During Westhill’s 5-2 win over Bishop Grimes earlier in the week, Katie Ferrara and Phoebe Langdon both produced 6-0, 6-0 singles shutouts, beating Clare Williams and Mallory Martin, respectively. Eileen Fleming handled Hannah Paparella 6-0, 6-2.
Over in doubles, Kathleen Dillon and Anna Pullano topped Caitlyn Buckman and Nicole Donati 6-0, 6-1. Bailey McBride and Amanda Vecchio had a 6-3, 6-1 win over Melanie Burke and Marie Gibbons
The Warriors then lost a tight 4-3 decision to Skaneateles one day later, where each of the singles matches went to three sets.
Fleming held off Katelyn Ellison 6-4, 2-6, 6-3, while Carello also needed the full distance to beat Alaina Davis 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. Ferrara could not hold on to an early lead on Makenzi Herbst as, two games from victory, she took a 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 loss.
Langdon, in doubles, teamed with Bridget Sherlock to beat Elizabeth Belinski and Emily Call 7-6 (7-3), 6-2, but the Lakers won the other matches in straight sets. Connor Catone and Dana Elleman had the closest call, falling to Avery Bird and Grace Magee 6-3, 6-4.
