One big contrast between the boys and girls soccer situations in the OHSL Freedom division is that Jamesville-DeWitt and East Syracuse-Minoa only meet once on the boys side, but have two contests on the girls side.

So the first of those girls games take place Tuesday, after a week where the Red Rams won twice and the Spartans had to settle for a split.

Still without a league loss, the J-D girls went to Mexico last Tuesday afternoon and lit up the board again, cruising to a 6-0 victory over the Tigers.

The Red Rams took a total of 23 shots. Better yet, its production was spread around as six different players – Jessica Holmes, Tessa Devereaux, Paige Sherling, Ella DiGiovanni, Olivia Ferlenda and Allie Balotin – had the six goals. Holmes, Balotin and Emily Elbers added assists.

As this went on, the ESM girls team edged Chittenango 2-1 to improve to 5-1 on the season. A goal in each half proved enough as Amanda Wall scored once and assisted on Nicole Devona’s tally. Alex McEachron earned the assist on Wall’s goal.

J-D was clinical in Thursday’s 4-0 shutout of Cortland, scoring twice in each half and taking 23 shots to the Purple Tigers’ two to make it more lopsided. Just as with Mexico, Holmes had one goal and one assist, while Ferlenda, Tessa Devereaux and Maddy Devereaux earned the other goals.

ESM, though, fell to Fulton 2-0, its attack rendered silent by an effective Red Raiders defense. Maddie Robillard and Jocelyn Ravesi earned the goals for Fulton, negating Casie Auricchio’s four saves.

In boys action, J-D, no. 3 in the first state Class A rankings of the season, got to double digits on the board in last Tuesday’s 10-1 romp over Phoenix.

Scoring five times in each half, the Rams had Jimmy Fazio, Tom Lukow and Mike Mulvihill each post a pair of goals. Pablo Martinez managed a goal and assist as Pat LaRussa, Jesse Evensky and Peter Silsz also took turns finding the net. Sam Dye, Pat Maroney, Lucas Johnson and Adam Resetarits earned assists, too.

ESM had to come from behind to forge a 2-2 draw with Fowler. Jean Paul Mboyo’s pair of goals left the Spartans down 2-0 at the break, but Esad Tihic and Alem Hozo converted in the late going to draw even. Casey Sullivan had eight saves, the same total as Falcons keeper Elijah Kumeh.

Now the Spartans hosted CBA on Friday night, and took a 2-0 loss to the Brothers. Sullivan had eight saves, only slipping in the first half when Manny Collins and Pat Pierret scored for CBA. Try as it could, ESM could not get anything past CBA goalie Kevin Bailey, who also had eight saves.

This followed J-D’s 8-0 shutout of Mexico on Thursday. Making it six wins in a row, the Rams blazed to a 7-0 lead by halftime as it saw Martinez and Andrew Lee each find the net twice. Mulvihill, Fazio, Dan Canfield and Noel Williams also scored, with Lukow getting two assists and Anthony Epifani adding an assist, too.

Playing again on Saturday, J-D beat Cortland 5-2, mainly because it bolted out to a 3-0 first-half lead before the Purple Tigers’ offense could settle in.

The Rams, who improved to 7-0 on the season, showed terrific balance against Cortland as five different players – Lukow, Martinez, Fazio, Williams and John Maroney – managed the five goals. Epifani and Luca Pelligra earned assists.
