Still atop the OHSL Freedom division standings, the Christian Brothers Academy boys golf team fought to maintain its undefeated mark, through sunshine and rain.
A big key in that process was last Tuesday’s match against Jamesville-DeWitt. The two neighbors dueled at Drumlins, and CBA came out on top, inching past the Red Rams 185-189.
And this happened despite a blistering performance from J-D’s Erik Davis, who posted a 31, the lowest OHSL round of the season. But CBA countered with Aidan Fuller shooting a 35, plus Chris Bousquet and Andrew Derrenbacker each posting 36, ahead of the Rams’ Mike Engstrom, who posted a 39.
Mark Finlay and Matt Preston had matching totals of 39 to help CBA pull out the match, while J-D’s Deke Burns also had a 39, ahead of Joe Shapiro (40) and Alex Katsarsky (42).
CBA, on Wednesday, shot 194 at the Links at Erie Village to sweep a four-team match over both of ESM’s sides, along with Mexico. ESM Blue finished at 227, with ESM Orange (247) and Mexico (259) rounding out the field.
Matt Preston, shooting a 36, led CBA’s effort, two shots ahead of Derrenbacker, while Finlay had a 39 and Jack Bellardini posted a 40. Fuller’s 41 tied him with ESM’s Mike Brown Miller, while Bryan Reader (42), Kyle Reader (43) and Colin Sloan (46) also had solid efforts for the Spartans.
Against Fulton last Monday at Drumlins, the Brothers handled the Red Raiders 193-231. Chris Bousquet flirted with par and finished with a nine-hole total of 35, two shots ahead of Fuller. Bellardini posted a 38, with Sean Dain adding a 41 and Finlay managing a 42.
To complete a 4-0 week, CBA handled Tully 193-228 Friday amid the rain at Vesper Hills. Fuller led with a 35, just ahead of Bousquet (36) and Bellardini (38), while Derrenbacker and Preston each posted a 42.
Davis remained in top form as, 24 hours after the CBA match, J-D beat Fulton 190-228 at Battle Island. This time around, Davis shot a 34 as the Rams posted the top three individual totals, Davis supported by Burns (37) and Shapiro (38). Luke Sala improved to a 39, with Engstrom adding a 42.
J-D started the week by going to Orchard Valley last Monday and smashed LaFayette 198-244. Up front, Burns shot a 38, with Shapiro and Katsarsky each managing rounds of 39. Davis and Engstrom both posted 41.
At week’s end, the Red Rams knocked off East Syracuse-Minoa’s Orange squad 223-254 as Alex Katsarsky managed a 39 in the wet conditions. Ben Katsarsky added a 45, the same number as William Darcy, while Brendon Schunk had a 46. Max Havens and Edward Han each posted 48.
ESM’s teams also went to Vesper Hills, where ESM Blue shot 212 to finish just behind Tully (208) as ESM Orange posted 236. The Spartans lost even though Miller shot a 35, four shots better than the Black Knights’ Austin Krom. Dan MacDougall also had a 39, while Sloan posted a 41.
On Thursday, ESM Blue did beat Fulton 207-227, as Miller posted a 38, with MacDougall and Bryan Reader each shooting 40. Brian Kiehl added a 45. ESM Orange fell to Phoenix 198-235, Kyle Reader shooting a 40 ahead of Jeff Toole (45) and Colin Sloan (46).
Up in the CNY Counties League, Fayetteville-Manlius pushed past Liverpool 200-208 at Liverpool Country Club. The Hornets posted the top three individual totals, as Dan Thomas shot a 37, with Nick Perrucci and Anthony Millimaci each adding 38, all ahead of the Warriors’ Steve Baldini, who led his side with a 40. Ryan Keller had a 43 and Mike Lee added a 44.
Back home at Woodcrest on Wednesday, the Hornets defeated Oswego 197-206. Millimaci, with a 37, beat the Buccaneers’ Alec Kunzwiller by one shot. Perrucci managed a 39, with Lee and Nick Santoro each shooting 40 and Thomas adding a 41.
