Cicero-North Syracuse’s girls volleyball team has emerged as the clearest challenger to Baldwinsville among the Class AA ranks.

The Northstars improved to 6-0 last Tuesday with a 25-10, 25-15, 25-15 sweep of Corcoran. Carly Rebecchi managed six kills and three aces, with Lindsey Silfer adding three kills, three aces and five assists. Amy VanHoven served up six aces to go with her 13 assists, while Emily Becker and Tiffany Ryan each helped with four digs.

Going for seven in a row Thursday night, CNS got past Central Square in four sets. It rolled through the opener 25-12, only to see the Red Hawks take the second set 25-18. Unfazed, the Northstars claimed the next two sets by 25-17 and 25-20 margins.

Silfer mixed in 10 kills, 12 assists and six blocks. VanHoven added 13 assists, five digs, two blocks and two kills, while Adrianna Patzer stepped up with eight blocks and five kills. Rebecchi added five kills and three aces, with Becker contributing three aces and six digs and Cara Gannett finishing with three blocks.

Liverpool improved to 4-2 last Tuesday by sweeping Auburn 25-14, 25-23, 25-23. Each of the last two sets proved tough, but the Warriors won all the important points.

Dorothy Rosekrans, Stephanie Mumpton (six kills each) and Cassi McCrum (five kills) split front-line production, with Kelly Fitzpatrick and Gabby Gould adding four kills apiece. On the back line, Meghan Stonebarger managed 19 assists and Jenna Bush added six assists.

Then the Warriors swept Corcoran 25-18, 28-26, 25-18. Though the second set proved long, Liverpool still pulled through as Rosekrans got 11 kills and seven digs, with Mumpton adding seven kills. McCrum and Katie Rowell had four kills apiece in front of Stonebarger, who managed 28 assists.

In boys volleyball, CNS took on Liverpool Wednesday night, and in three sets the Northstars cast aside the Warriors 25-12, 25-20, 25-17.

Justin Collins earned 26 assists, feeding it to Billy Werskman and Joel Brousseau, who had seven kills apiece. GeoffHolmes added four kills and Morgan Austen put up three kills.

Liverpool saw Pat Kenney get four blocks and five digs, with John Milligan adding seven digs. Dalton Horton had four assists and Anthony Calabrese contributed six digs.

In the Northstars’ 25-10, 25-16, 25-12 sweep of Syracuse, Werksman picked up six kills and five aces, while Holmes had four kills and five aces. Collins had 16 assists.

A five-set battle with Midlakes followed on Saturday afternoon. CNS lost the opener 25-17, only to claim the next two sets 25-18 and 25-20. Midlakes prolonged the match by taking a close fourth set 25-23. In the final set, the Northstars pulled out a 25-21 decision.

Collins had 42 assists, an average of better than eight assists per set. Werksman managed 15 kills, while Holmes had 12 kills, three aces and three digs, and Brousseau added 10 kills. Robert Palucci contributed eight digs and Alex Brodhead earned five kills.
