For the second time this fall, the Cazenovia girls volleyball team found itself on the wrong end of a five-set defeat, this time beaten by Fulton last Tuesday night at Buckley Gym.
From the start, the Lakers and Red Raiders were in close quarters. Fulton claimed the opening set 25-23, only to have Cazenovia take the second set by that same margin and, in the third set, prevail by a comfortable 25-17 margin.
Yet that didn’t keep the Red Raiders from fighting to a fourth-set victory, 25-22, and in the final set the Lakers could not respond, losing that set 25-21.
Through it all, Amber Robinson amassed 15 assists, 17 digs, nine kills, two aces and two blocks, while Staci Valik mixed in nine assists and eight digs.
Dana Kiselica got 30 digs, plus four kills and two aces. Katelyn Puukila had seven kills and three blocks, while Emily Stoker posted five blocks. Dominique Lyons had 12 digs, with Madison Gabor and Amara Kattrein each managing seven digs. Fulton featured Erika Johnson (17 kills), Sara Campolieta (eight kills, 16 digs) and Erika Johnson, who had 17 kills and seven digs.
The Lakers would head back to winning form on Friday, sweeping Fowler 25-7, 25-7, 25-4 as the refurbished Buckley Gym made its debut.
Cazenovia recorded 28 service aces, nine of them from Jessica Matt, who also had three kills. Robinson picked up five assists, four aces and four kills, while Valik had five kills and three aces. Puukila mixed in five kills and five aces. Kiselica (four aces) and Lucy Shephard (three aces) made contributions, too.
The Lakers, with that win, improved to 5-3 on the season and host Westhill on Wednesday for its only match this week.
