Further enforcing its status as the CNY Counties League favorites, the West Genesee girls swim team battled past Fayetteville-Manlius 99-81 Wednesday night in the home opener at the Wildcats’ pool in Camillus.
Olivia Castro and Shannon Cahalan both won a pair of individual races. Castro swam the 200 freestyle in 2:00.92 and, in the 100 freestyle, beat the field in a time of 55.58 seconds.
As for Cahalan, she needed 1:06.29 to claim first in the 100 butterfly before going to the 100 backstroke and taking that title in 1:06.60.
Kim Pedrotti nearly had a double, too, winning the 200 indivdiual medley in 2:24.21 and going to the wire in the 500 freestyle before falling to F-M’s Katie Pechaeck, 5:31.82 to Pechacek’s 5:30.67. But Pedrotti did help Brianna Smith, Jesse Brusa and Gianna Branca swim to victory in the 200 medley relay in 2:00.39.
On her own, Smith was victorious in the 50 freestyle in 27.15 seconds, with Abby Mullett earning first place in the 100 breaststroke in 1:20.37. Abby Uczen added a victory on the diving board, earning 206.95 points.
Two big road meets now loom for the 2-0 Wildcats, who go to Oswego next Wednesday and take on Auburn Oct. 5. Both the Buccaneers and Maroons could prove challengers in WG’s attempt to repeat as league champions.
