Instead of relaxing, the Westhill boys track and field team went out and made a big impact during last Tuesday’s Tully Spring Break Invitational.
Amid a field of 14 sides, the Warriors took third place, earning 66 points, just behind Skaneateles (67 points) for the runner-up spot. Jamesville-DeWitt won with 93 points. Marcellus (30 points) and Jordan-Elbridge (28.5 points) were ninth and 10th, respectively.
Westhill got 17 of those points in the 3,200-meter run, where Jon Moore won in a time of 10:48.32, with Liam Rodgers and Alec Walsh fourth and fifth, respectively. Another win came in the 4×400 relay, where Christian St. Amour, Jack Honis, Matt Trendowski and Tim Sheridan finished in 3:46.73, more than 15 seconds ahead of the field.
Meanwhile, Corey Wilkinson swept the throwing events, as he flung the discus 126 feet 5 inches, nearly 10 feet clear of the field, and also prevailed in the shot put with a toss of 42 feet 6 1/4 inches. Teammate Carson Hicks was fifth in both events.
Sheridan cleared 5 feet 4 inches for fourth place in the high jump. Kevin Fagan was fifth in the 400 hurdles and Casey Bunce took sixth in the 800-meter run.
Marcellus won the 1,600 sprint medley relay, where Nate Waite, John Bell, Brad Kermes and Justin Garn finished in 3:53.25, more than three seconds ahead of runner-up CBA. Bunce, Trendowski, Honis and St. Amour put Westhill third in 4:03.34.
Rob Coon took the pole vault, the only competitor to clear 11 feet, while Chaz Hayes went 40 feet 1 1/2 inches in the triple jump for second place. The Mustangs also had Waite run to fifth in the 100-meter dash in 12.03 seconds,
J-E featured Steve Slonosky, Jack Gugle, Robert Patterson and Eric Gross getting third place in the 4×800 relay in 9:38.34.
Nick Byrnes got to second in the 200-meter dash in 24.73 seconds and was seventh in the 100. Tyler May earned fourth in the shot put (35 feet 5 3/4 inches) as Gugle, Slonosky and Dylan Whittico were fifth in the mile relay with combined times of 15:32.70.
In the girls edition of the Tully meet, Marcellus had 22 points, tying CBA and South Lewis for ninth place as Jordan-Elbridge (11 points) and Westhill (nine points) lagged further back.
Marcellus saw eighth-grader Tori Stopen get second place in the 400 sprint with a time of 1:06.08., where Solvay’s Tina Clemente (1:07.63) was fourth. Lizzy Dean, Rachel Garn, Kathryn Busa and Shannon Twombly were fourth in the 1,600 sprint medley relay, with Garn, on her own, landing in second place in the 800 in 2:24.83.
J-E’s 4×100 quartet of Rachel Betts, Brianna Byrnes, McKenzie Williams and Rachel Scott rose to third place in 54.07 seconds. Scott earned fourth in the 400 hurdles (1:11.85) as Betts had a sixth in the 100 in 13.75 seconds.
The Mustangs’ Sarah Francesconi was fifth in the high jump, clearing 4 feet 8 inches, the same height as Solvay’s Courtney Napolitano, who took fewer misses and was fourth. Westhill was fifth in the 4×400 and sixth in the 4×800, though Emily Washburn, by herself, gained third in the 3,000-meter run in 11:07.59.
