Teams qualify for sectional basketball playoffs

Now it is post-season time in high school basketball, as the Section III playoff pairings were announced Sunday afternoon.

On the girls side, Cazenovia, who was 17-0 before closing the regular season with a 50-40 loss to Jordan-Elbridge last Thursday night, grabbed the no. 2 seed for the Class B tournament and will play either no. 7 seed General Brown or no. 10 seed Skaneateles Friday night in the quarterfinals at Buckley Gym at 7 p.m. Canastota, the no. 12 seed, visits no. 5 seed Utica-Notre Dame in Tuesday’s opening round.

Hamilton, beginning its defense of the sectional Class D championship, is a no. 3 seed with a 15-3 record, and will go straight into the quarterfinals Thursday night, where it will face no 6 seed Cincinnatus at 7 p.m. In Class C-2, Morrisville-Eaton, the no. 6 seed in Class C-2 at 11-7, visits no. 3 seed Mohawk at 7 p.m., while Canastota takes a no. 12 seed into the Class B

Moving to boys basketball, Chittenango (9-9) has the no. 8 seed in Class A and is at home Tuesday night to play no. 9 seed East Syracuse-Minoa, hoping to advance to face top seed Cortland later in the week.

At the same time, no. 5 seed Oneida, the Tri-Valley League West division champions at 11-7, will host no. 12 seed Phoenix as no. 6 seed Vernon-Verona-Sherrill, also 11-7, hosts no. 11 seed Utica-Notre Dame.

In the Class B boys bracket, Canastota, the no. 15 seed who made the tournament despite a 5-13 mark, visits no. 2 seed General Brown as Hamilton (7-11) picked up the no. 14 seed in Class D and will play no. 3 seed Lyme in Tuesday’s first round.
