All of the area’s top boys indoor track and field athletes will make their way to Colgate University this Sunday for the Section III championships, with the girls to follow on Friday and Saturday.
Long before that, though, there was one more tune-up, as boys and girls sides went to SUNY-Cortland for last weekend’s Bob Grieve Invitational.
West Genesee’s boys rose to fifth place, with 32 points, as Marcellus tied for eighth with 26 points. They dominated the mile, where WG’s Billy Gabriel won in 4:18.55, but the Mustangs’ Jesse Garn (4:20.88) and Ryan Manahan (4:29.17) beat the Wildcats’ Martin Leff in fourth (4:31.73). So Marcellus beat WG 8:50.05 to 8:50.28, a difference of just 0.23 seconds.
Also for the Mustangs, Justin Garn and Joe Fallon were second in the 600-meter run in 3:03.25, with Jordan-Elbridge’s Greg Bader and Carlin Coomey in fourth (3:05.85). Fallon and Justin Garn joined Manahan and Jesse Garn for a second in the 4×400 relay in 3:41.92, just behind Fayetteville-Manlius, who won in 3:40.77.
WG saw Matt Byrnes and Matt Gonnella rise to second place in the 1,000-meter run in 5:38.62. Peter Richardson and Will Johnson were fourth in the 55-meter dash (20.28 seconds), with Westhill/Bishop Ludden in fifth. Tony Trezolo and Frank Misco were fourth in the long jump and the Wildcats were fifth in the 4×200 relay and sixth in the triple jump.
Westhill/Bishop Ludden’s big moment came in the pole vault, where Alex Phelan and Mike Herholtz combined to clear 20 feet – the same height as Skaneateles, but with fewer misses. WG’s tandem of Peter James and Chris Piccioni were third with 19 feet 6 inches.
In the girls meet, where West Genesee was seventh with 20 points, Abby Uczen and Brianna Richardson were second in the triple jump, going 59 feet 2 3/4 inches between them.
Laura Leff won the individual 1,000-meter run, edging F-M’s Jillian Fanning, 3:00.18 to 3:00.62, as Leff and Amy Hannahan were third with a total time of 6:28.51. The Wildcats were also fourth in the 1,500-meter run and fifth in the 55 hurdles.
J-E saw Megan Greenwood and Kathryn Alonso-Bergevin throw the shot put 54 feet 4 inches between them to get third place. Marcellus got most of its points from Alanna Todd rising to third in the high jump with a clearance of 4 feet 10 inches. Westhill/Ludden had Brenna Rainone and Alison Tartaglia run to third in the 55 sprint in 16.41 seconds, just behind first-palce Baldwinsville (16.33).
