For now, the West Genesee girls volleyball team has found its way to second place in the CNY Counties League National division, right behind perennial leader Baldwinsville.
The Wildcats came through again in last Tuesday’s home match against Auburn, where it tore through the first two games 25-9 and 25-13, then held off the Maroons 25-22 in the third game to complete the sweep.
Julie Barriere, with her seven aces, earned quick points. As for the points that went longer, Meganderks got 11 assists, her passes going to Kathryn Roswood, who had seven kills, and Stephanie Neshevski, who got five kills. On the defensive side, Ashley Amidon finished with eight digs, adding three aces as Roswood and Jackie Harris each had four digs.
Thursday’s match against Fayetteville-Manlius saw a trio of close games — but the Wildcats would win all of them and sweep the Hornets. Both of the first two games ended 25-23, WG going from danger to a comfortable position, and it closed things out 25-21 in the third game.
Megan Derks accumulated 19 assists and eight digs, plus three kills and four aces. Jackie Harris picked up 18 digs and Amidon earned 14 digs, with Trish Andrews earning a team-best six kills. Roswood and Emily Shackleton got nine digs apiece.
Bishop Ludden took the first game in Wednesday night’s match against Fowler, 25-23, but lost the next three games to the Falcons by scores of 25-18, 25-18 and 25-23.
WG alum Katie Griffin notched a team-high 42 kills and Solvay’s Calla Bakowski had 150 assists as Onondaga Community College’s women’s volleyball team finished second with a 5-1 mark at the Sept. 24-25 Cara Bryant Memorial Tournament. In all, 12 teams competed, with OCC reaching the finals before losing to Monroe Community College.
