Cazenovia’s girls cross country team went to Saturday’s 59th annual Baldwinsville Invitational, where it competed in the small-school division – and went right to the top, with a familiar foe right behind them.
Overall, the Lakers earned 67 points, easily the best total in a 20-team field as Marcellus (whom the Lakers beat in an OHSL Liberty division meet three days earlier) had to settle for the second spot with 111 points. No one else was close.
All of the top Laker runners stayed close to each other, and the strategy worked. Hollie Marcelle finished 10th in a time of 19:52.9, 1.1 seconds ahead of Rae Tobey, who was 11th in 19:54 flat.
The two freshmen, Jeannette Cudney and Malone Gabor, followed the same pattern, as Cudney got 13th place in 20:14.0 and Gabor was 14th in 20:20.1. When Michelle Karker crossed the line in 19th place (20:41.3), Cazenovia had its first-place finish, with Margaret Wolsey 25th in 20:55.7.
Both of Cazenovia’s teams are home this Wednesday to take on Christian Brothers Academy and Hannibal.
