Trying to break into the win column in 2010, the Skaneateles girls soccer team needed four attempts to pull it off — but when it did, it was quite emphatic.
The Lakers, 0-2-1 going into Thursday’s home game against undefeated Solvay, reversed its own fortunes and picked up a 3-0 victory over the Bearcats.
Not only did Solvay bring a 3-0 record to town, it also possessed a fast, diverse attack that the Skaneateles defense had to respect.
Yet the Lakers’ back line proved worthy of that challenge, taking out Alexis Bandera and her front-line mates. And when the shots took place, Mary Buck scooped them up, 13 saves in all.
Skaneateles edged out in front 1-0 by halftime, then pulled away late behind Carly Davis notching a pair of goals. Diane Vitkus had the other goal, with Rachel Hurley recording a pair of assists.
All that improvement did not come overnight, for back on Tuesday Skaneateles had started to turn it around with a 1-1 tie against Cazenovia in the latest battle of Laker teams.
Skaneateles seized the early advantage when Taylor Kerr landed an unassisted goal in the first half, but Cazenovia countered as Becca Wheeler converted in the second half.
Most of the time, Skaneateles did control the flow of play, though it found a fair amount of frustration as Cazenovia goalie Jamie Enders had 10 saves, twice the total of Buck.
From that tie, Skaneateles gained a small measure of confidence that skyrocketed in the wake of the Solvay romp. Now the Lakers hit the road this week for trips to Hannibal on Tuesday and Homer on Saturday afternoon.
