Through its opening week of its first-ever fall season, the Skaneateles girls volleyball team owns a 2-1 mark.
The Lakers beat Utica Proctor in its Sept. 7 opener, but fell back a bit on Thursday in a three-game loss to Oswego.
A long opening game proved pivotal, as Skaneateles had several chances to win it, but could not break through as the Buccaneers finally pulled it out 31-29. From there, it took the next two games by scores of 25-20 and 25-14.
Gabby Eckles finished with six kills, nine assists and seven digs, while Erin Callahan offered 15 digs on the defensive side.
Sheila Gaffney (seven digs) and Anna Goodell (six digs) also played strong defense as Julianna Augustine earned a team-best eight kills and Colleen Cargile had five assists. Jasmine Davis (16 kills) and Krisi Stemple (38 assists) led Oswego along.
Things turned around 24 hours later, at Auburn, where the Lakers never faced a serious threat in a 25-14, 25-12, 25-12 sweep of the Maroons.
Setting the tone, Eckles served up 10 aces, adding seven assists. Cargile had seven assists and six digs, while Caroline Walton had five kills and Augustine earned four kills. Goodell picked up nine digs, four kills and four aces. Callahan had six digs.
On Tuesday, Skaneateles visits Bishop Ludden, another team that moved to the fall from winter. Then the Lakers return home Friday to face West Genesee.
