Two new exhibits open Aug. 28:
The Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center, 205 Genesee St., Auburn, will open two new exhibitions on Saturday, Aug. 28. Fred Yehl: A retrospective and Landscapes: Neil Berger, Nancy Treherne Craig and Richard Henry. The exhibits will be on view through Oct. 17 with an opening reception Sunday, Aug. 29 from 3 to 5p.m.
Fred Yehl: A Retrospective will feature more than 85 works by Skaneateles artist Yehl, whose stylized tempera paintings depict landscapes, trees, leaves, flowers, buildings and animals. The exhibition will also include a series of 26 illustrations Yehl painted based on Aesop’s Fables.
At 92, Yehl who was born on Feb. 3, 1918 and grew up in Olean, still paints every day and teaches a weekly painting class for adults at the Skaneateles Community Center. He served in the U.S. Army and spent several years stationed in the South Pacific.
Upon returning to the states, Yehl enrolled in the Cleveland School of Art where he studied industrial design. After three years teaching design at Auburn University, he began designing glassware for Fostoria Glass Company in West Virginia and then ornamental picture frames and mirrors for Syroco (Syracuse Ornamental Co.) in Baldwinsville. Upon retiring, Yehl taught a small adult painting class for many years at the Schweinfurth Art Center.
Yehl now makes his home at the Prebyterian Manor on Genesee Street in Skaneateles.
Also on view is a contemporary landscape exhibition entitled, Landscapes: Neil Berger, Nancy Treherne Craig & Richard Henry, will include almost 30 paintings by three regional artists.

Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, 1 to 5 p.m. Suggested admission is $3 for adults. Children under 12 and members are free.
