In a July 26 Marcellus Village Board Meeting, mayor John Curtin spoke on the progress of the Reed Street construction, which, as witnessed by residents of Reed and North streets in the days leading up to the July 26 meeting, appeared to be at a halt.
Curtin explained that on Thursday July 22, a DEC storm water specialist had notified the village and all contractors to cease operations immediately pending further review of the SWPP (storm water pollution prevention plan) report.
“They wanted to examine the enhanced phosphorus removal procedural standard that was set by the DEC,” Curtin said.
Prior to the meeting, Curtin was informed by town engineer Allen Yager that the DEC storm water specialist seemed satisfied and construction on the road could soon commence.
Vandalism addressed
Curtin noted the vandalism that took place at the Steadman House in recent weeks. He noted potentially related acts of vandalism, including the overturning of several village flower pots.
“This has caused the police to step up patrols,” Curtin said, adding that residents are encouraged to be on watch for acts of vandalism in the village.
“I might also mention the outpouring of support that the historical society has received,” Curtin said. “There have been a number of offers to pay for the signs, fix the lighting.”
Curtin announced that the Syracuse Blue Print, owned and operated by the Nye family of Marcellus, offered to donate a new sign to the Historical Society.
“Donations have come in through a number of sources,” he added. “I think it’s important to make special note of the generosity, support and encouragement provided by so many in the community.”

Curtin noted that the village clock has been fixed “and it now chimes as it should.”
The village board welcomed Ryan Novak as the new owner of the Chocolate Pizza Company.
