Do you know your neighbor?
The Village of Jordan will host an Old Time Community Picnic from 4 to 8 p.m. July 31 at the Jordan pool in celebration of its 175th anniversary. Organizers hope that by the end, fewer people will be answering “no” to that question.
“We like to think we still have neighborhoods,” said Jordan Mayor Dick Platten. “Folks come in and out so quickly, they don’t know their neighbors.”
The purpose of the event, which organizers hope to make annual, is to bring people together for a low-key, fun time, that’s basically free. The admission? One non-perishable item per household to be donated to the Jordan-Elbridge food pantry.
“There’s more and more folks who are a little bit down on their luck right now with the economy the way it is, and this has always been a very giving community,” Platten said. “And we don’t expect anything different. It’s just a way of life out here in the Jordan area.”
Live music is anticipated for the event, and there will be plenty of water to swim in, so bring a suit. The pool holds a half million gallons of water, measuring 13.5 feet at its deepest point, and features two diving boards — a 1-meter board for the casual diver and a 3-meter board for those feeling more adventurous.
Dinner will be hamburgers and hot dogs, sold by the volunteer pool committee, and guests are asked to bring a dish to pass. Last names starting with A through H are asked to bring an appetizer or munchies, I through P, a casserole or salad, and Q through Z, a dessert.
