The Marcellus Town Board scheduled a public hearing for 7 p.m. Monday July 12 to allow residents to comment on the proposal to extend the terms of the town clerk, tax collector and highway superintendent from two years to four.
All three are elected positions.
The proposal was made at the request of town clerk Karen Pollard, highway superintendent Don MacLachlan and tax collector Elaine Potter.
Marcellus Supervisor Dan Ross said the decision to double the terms for the three posts would ultimately come down to a public referendum if the board decided to move forward with the request.
“If there was a lot of public opposition, the board may choose not to even do that,” Ross said.
Should the proposal move to referendum it would go before voters in November as a proposition on Election Day.
Fire barn to be sold
The town board also accepted the Marcellus Village Board’s purchase offer for the Marcellus Fire barn during the regular monthly meeting June 14. The offer would cover the remaining debt and cover closing costs, attorney fees and other related expenses for a total of $890,000, Ross said.
A special meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday June 24 and Ross said the board would likely determine how to proceed with bonding for the building.
The June 24 meeting is open to the public.
Marcellus deputy town clerk resigns
The Marcellus Town Board last week accepted the resignation of deputy town clerk Laurie Stevens, who has worked for the town for 10 years.
Ross said Stevens had decided to leave her post as town clerk Karen Pollard’s second in command to work for the business she and her husband founded.
“We’ll miss her,” Ross said. “She’s a self-starter who got things done.”
The deputy is appointed by the town clerk. Ross said Pollard is currently reviewing applications for Stevens’ replacement.
