Baldwinsville track and field stars Shaun Thompson and Brian Kane both earned victories during last Thursday’s Section III state qualifying meet at Cicero-North Syracuse’s Bragman Stadium.
Thompson steadily moved away from the pack in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and didn’t stop until he had posted a winning time of nine minutes, 31.59 seconds, more than 15 seconds ahead of CNS’s Dan Fritz.
Meanwhile, Kane’s season-long domination of the high jump continued, as his clearance of 6 feet 2 inches, with fewer misses than Nottingham’s Polich Anyek, led to another title as he looks for a medal at this weekend’s state meet at Vestal High School near Binghamton.
Andrew Hoover, by finishing second in the 110-meter high hurdles in 15.15 seconds (Liverpool’s Joe Spernyak won in 15.05), finished just inside the state qualifying standard of 15.21 and advanced to Vestal.
Adam Pacheck earned third place in the Division I (large school) 3,200-meter run in 9:31.85, while Nate McCabe took third in the mile in 4:24.91. Ethan Pacheck, Charles Parker and Alec Peinkofer joined Adam Pacheck for a third in the 4×800 relay in 8:23.18.
On the girls side, Laura Farleman made a spirited push to qualify for the state meet in the Division I pentathlon. Farleman’s five-event total of 2,815 points was just 35 points short of the Division I standard.
B’ville was third in the 4×100 relay. Gina Carnovale, Gabrielle Jordan, Allie Vroman and Paige Corso finished in a time of 51.16 seconds. Rome Free Academy won in 49.34 seconds.
Quaneisha Ivey, Morgan Marshall, Mackenzie Ross and Abigail Nelson were sixth in the 4×800 relay in 4:18.27, with Jaimee Balloni, Mallory Warner, Jordan Perrone and Anne Peterson fifth in the 4×800 relay in 10:00.71.
Jordan was seventh in the 100-meter dash as Erica Miller took 10th in the shot put, throwing it 31 feet 8 1/2 inches.
