The Spectres of Liberty art group (Brooklyn and Syracuse) in collaboration with Syracuse University’s Art School have transformed the XL Project Space art gallery at 307 S. Clinton Street (in Armory Square) into the Open City Workshop.
The Open City workshop is a space where people can come to talk about how Syracuse’s history resonates with issues facing the city today, participate in a radio program, take part in a print shop, and visit the on-going art installation that will contribute to a large-scale public art event at the Lipe Art Park on June 5.
The Open City Workshop is open Tuesday to Sunday, noon to 6p.m., now through June 5.
The Great Central Depot in the Open City is the name of the special one night public art event at Lipe Art Park on June 5th. Inspired by Syracuse’s abolitionist history, specifically the words of Reverend Jermaine Loguen, the artists have run a series of events, workshops, and interviews connecting the past to the present in preparation for the outdoor exhibition. The public art event will contain words and images inspired both by history and by the interactions with the people of Syracuse who have participated in the Open City Workshop. The Lipe Art Park public event is free and open to all. The Spectres of Liberty previous public artwork was named “Best of the Capital Region” in 2008 by the Albany Times-Union.
ABOUT SPECTRES OF LIBERTY:
Spectres of Liberty is an artist collaborative made up of Dara Greenwald, Josh MacPhee , and Olivia Robinson. They have presented their work at festivals and conferences including Conflux, Visible Memories, Accidental Publics and Performance Studies International. Their work was named “Best of the Capital Region” in 2008 by the Albany Times-Union and has been written about in Space Magazine, The Huffington Post, and ASPECT: The Chronicle of New Media Art. ABOUT THE ART SCHOOL IN THE ART SCHOOL: The Art School in The Art School (The AS in The AS) founded by Joanna Spitzner seeks to generate a creative and intellectual community through an open school / open source structure.Through activities such as classes, discussions, forming groups of interest, reading groups, critique groups, workshops, eating and drinking, publishing, and making, The AS in the AS seeks to create an experimental environment for shared inquiry.
