Almost by himself, Tre Williams made the singular difference as Christian Brothers Academy’s boys track and field team went to the top at Monday’s OHSL Liberty division championship meet at Marcellus High School’s oval.
Williams won four events, amounting to 40 points, as the Brothers earned 137 points overall, just ahead of the host Marcellus Mustangs, who were second with 119 points. Westhill (76 points) led the rest of the pack.
In the 200-meter dash, Williams dueled with Marcellus standout Mike Quercia, who won two other events at this meet. At the line, Williams, in 22.96 seconds, had beaten Quercia by 0.70 seconds, a clear margin in a sprint.
Then came the field events. In the high jump, Williams cleared 6 feet 4 inches, while no one else could get past 6 feet. Moving to the long jump, Williams took off and went 21 feet 8 inches for another title, and to cap it off, he went 43 feet 2 1/2 inches for a victory in the triple jump.
CBA also cleaned up in sprints, where John Dunmore, in 11.57 seconds, edged out teammate Amani Jackson (11.63) to win the 100-meter dash. Dunmore went 20 feet 3 3/4 inches in the long jump to finish second to Williams and added a fourth in the triple jump.
In the 4×100 relay, Dunmore, Amani Jackson, Fajri Jackson and Jameel Balenton combined for a quick time of 45.21 seconds, well clear of Westhill (47.21) and the rest. Jackson also took fourth in the 200 behind Williams, while Matt Giannino was second (53.11 seconds) to Quercia in the 400.
Tom Voorheis ran to second in the 3,200-meter run in 9:37.55, with Brendan Smith (9:51.45) in fourth as Smith also claimed third in the mile in 4:36.91. Giannino, Smith, Voorheis and Jared Sayles were fourth in the 4×800, and Giannino helped the Brothers claim sixth in the 4×400.
Will Brower had 2,371 points for second place in the pentathlon. Macky MacPherson claimed third place in the shot put (45 feet 2 3/4 inches), while Brendan McIntyre was fifth in both the 110 high hurdles and 400 hurdles and Kevin Frasor was sixth in the pole vault. Jack Lenkiewicz and Steve Anderson were fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
On the girls side at the OHSL Liberty meet, CBA finished with 57 points. Katie Brislin won the 400-meter sprint in 1:00.99, nearly a second ahead of the field, while Rachel Zajdel needed 2:23.19 to hold off the field in the 800-meter run. Zajdel, Brislin, Julia Quigley and Jess Giannino were third in the 4×400 in 4:22.87.
Betty Etheredge had a busy meet, finishing second in the triple jump (33 feet 4 1/2 inches) and third in the long jump, going 16 feet 11 inches. She also joined Kathleen Kirkman, Olivia Lore and Ashley Crouch for third place in the 4×100 relay (54.07 seconds).
Crouch ran to third place in the 100-meter high hurdles (17.42 seconds). Ellen Voorheis was fourth in the 2,000-meter steeplechase and Marie-Kate McGlynn sixth in the 1,500-meter run.
