With a bit more depth and defense on its side, the Liverpool girls lacrosse team got away from Cicero-North Syracuse in Friday night’s showdown at Bragman Stadium, prevailing by a score of 11-8. It was the only regular-season meeting between the two rivals, and the Northstars, languishing at 4-8, looked for its most signifcant win of the spring, and nearly got it. A back-and-forth first half saw both sides find modest amounts of success in the attack, and CNS kept up, to a point where the two sides went to the break in a 6-6 tie. In the second half, though, Liverpool moved out in front, aided by its defense. Marlee Heintz, Megan Sardella, Elise Tartaglia and Madison Buckley combined to hold the Northstars to two goals, and Tess Tracy finished with nine saves. Kathleen Conese led on the offensive end, scoring five goals. Allison Flood found the net three times, while Anna Daucher, Ashleigh Caruso and Andrea Flood had single goals. CNS’s Rachel Bowles had four goals, half her team’s output. Caity Hamilton and Stefany Gale each had one goal and one assist, with Emily Bryerton and Katie Jachim also converting. Stephanie Reynolds finished with 10 saves. Both sides were coming off close contests earlier in the week. Liverpool had battled past Henninger/Nottingham 14-10, while CNS had taken a 15-12 loss to Auburn. Liverpool was facing the squad that its head coach, Elizabeth Acee, played for in her high school days. Properly motivated, the Warriors doubled the Black Knights’ output in an 8-4 first half, then held off all of Henninger/Nottingham’s charges in the late going. Allison Flood had four goals, with Conese and Briana Mancini close behind as they both earned three goals. Caruso scored twice as Nina Tassone put up a goal and two assists and Kayla DeAngelis also scored. Emily Daniels led the Black Knights with seven goals. CNS could not make a late move against Auburn last Monday after falling behind 8-5 in the first half, even though Jamie Ryan put together five goals and one assist. In support, Bryerton and Rachel Bowles each found the net twice, with Gale, Hamilton and Sarah Bowles earning single goals. Auburn stayed ahead with goalie Megan Baran earning 17 saves as Christine Desocio earned six goals and Nicole Schattinger added five goals. As CNS deals with trips to Fayetteville-Manlius and Baldwinsville in the last week of the regular season, Liverpool brings Central Square and Corcoran to Solvay’s turf.
