Whatever the Corcoran boys lacrosse team does the rest of 2010, it can at least make the rare claim of beating West Genesee and Fayetteville-Manlius in the same season.
Way back on April 6, the Cougars beat the Wildcats in overtime. After a fair share of ups and downs, Corcoran took care of the other part Friday night, coming from behind at F-M to stun the previously unbeaten Hornets by a score of 8-6.
F-M came into this game with a 13-0 record and the no. 7 spot in the state Class AA rankings, though it had just narrowly beaten Auburn earlier in the week. Corcoran was 9-3, having just beat Oswego 14-6 behind Edmund Cathers’ five-goal effort.
Now Cathers, who is going to the University of Albany next year, was back in the net, and he, combined with the Cougars’ defense, would upend F-M — but it didn’t happen right away.
Up 2-1 after one period, Corcoran watched as the Hornets tried to take charge in the second quarter, scoring five times. But the Cougars kept up enough so that, as it went into halftime, it only trailed 6-4.
Amazingly, F-M would not score again, even though it took more shots, 26 to Corcoran’s 17. Logan Tousaw, Paul Kendall, Quon Green, Trenell Bogans, Aaron Lamontagne and Chris Domanski formed two back lines that had to stay active to withstand the Hornets’ constant pushes.
If the defenders weren’t forcing F-M into mistakes, Cathers was making a series of big stops, ultimately picking up 16 saves and giving his teammates a chance to come back.
Going into the fourth quarter, Corcoran still trailed, 6-5, but it pulled even on Kevin Sexton’s goal, then moved in front when James Cathers beat Stefan Basile for the go-ahead tally. As F-M tried to answer, the Cougars got the ball back and Jon Boehm put in the clincher.
James Cathers had a part in all but two of the Cougars’ scoring plays, finishing with two goals and four assists. Sexton and Cree Cathers also found the net twice as Kevin Thompson and Derrik Eccles got the other goals.
