Making its case that it might still be the Tri-Valley League’s best, the Oneida softball team went to New Hartford Monday afternoon and pulled off a 1-0 victory over the Spartans. Like so many other softball classics, it featured two first-rate pitching performances – one by the Indians’ Maria Rocco, the other by New Hartford’s Katie Cadieux, both of whom would allow just three hits in their complete-game efforts. Both sides worked, without much drama, until the top of the third inning, when Oneida loaded the bases with nobody out, but could not get the hit it needed. Then New Hartford had its own bases-loaded chance in the fourth. With one out, Rachelle Leone hit it hard – but Oneida’s Jamie Delgenio chased it down, and the runners stayed put. When Danielle Witchley flew out, it was still 0-0. Finally, in the fifth, Oneida broke through. Ann Duchene stood on second base when, with two outs, she went for a steal of third. When the throw from home plate flew off line, Duchene raced home. The drama wasn’t over, though. In the bottom of the seventh, Jenn Rougeux would save Rocco’s three-hit shutout with a pair of accurate throws. Katie Cadieux had led off with a single. Leone then singled to center – but as Cadieux ran to third, Rougeux charged the ball, threw – and Cadieux was tagged out as Leone made it to second base. That wasn’t all. Witchley then hit a fly ball to Rougeux for the second out. Nikki Talarico, pinch-running for Cadieux, took off for third. Rougeux’s throw went to Clare Henry, who relayed it to Morgan Murawski – who tagged Talarico for the third out, ending the game in Oneida’s favor.
