Marcellus boys track sweeps Solvay, Phoenix

The Marcellus boys track and field team would make the short trip to Solvay Wednesday afternoon and sweep a meet against the Bearcats and Phoenix Firebirds.

During the Mustangs’ 88.5-52.5 win over Solvay and 86-54 romp of Phoenix, Mike Quercia took first place in the 400-meter dash in 54.4 seconds, then went to the triple jump and prevailed by going 40 feet 1 1/2 inches.

Jesse Garn led the pack in the mile in 4:56.5, then returned to take the 3,200-meter run in 10:48.4 as Garn, Ryan Manahan, Tom Riccardi and Mike Fallon ran the 4×800 relay in 8:46.4.

In the 4×100, the Mustangs’ quartet of Nate Waite, Mitch Schoenburn, Nick Huss and Brad Kermes won in 47.3 seconds, with Huss soaring to first place in the pole vault as he cleared 12 feet 6 inches.

Solvay’s C.J. Brooks dominated the throwing events, tossing the shot put 51 feet 5 inches and the discus 120 feet 10 inches. John Salvagno gave the Bearcats a win in the 400-meter hurdles (1:02.2) as Matt Fedrizzi needed 2:09.5 to earn first in the 800-meter run.

Chris Hoffman, who won the 200-meter dash (24.3 seconds), teamed with Fedrizzi, Eric Goodrich and Mat Morse to give Solvay a 4×400 relay title in 3:45.1.

A close girls meet saw Marcellus drop a three-point decision to Phoenix, 72-69, while still earning an 86-55 win over Solvay. The Bearcats lost to the Firebirds 91-50.

Marcellus won two of the the three relays. Laura Quercia, Rachel Garn, Madeline Balman and Olivia Higgins ran the 4×800 in 10:46, and later Quercia and Garn helped Kim Duck and Chelsea Tarolli take the 4×400 in 4:29.4.

On her own, Garn, by taking the 1,500 (5:11.0), contributed to a Mustang sweep of the distance races as Quercia won the 800 (2:41.7) and Elizabeth Dean ran 3,000 meters in 11:58.5.

For Solvay, Kyndra Jackson earned the lone indivdual win with a shot put toss of 28 feet 9 inches as Beca Quick, Anna Salvagno, Christina Clemente and Kim Kirkpatrick claimed the 4×100 in 53.2 seconds. Phoenix’s Ashley Palmer won four times — in the 100, 200, long jump and triple jump — to boost her team’s effort.
