The big action for the Cicero-North Syracuse track and field teams this week involved high-profile invitational meets — the boys going to New Hartford on Friday, the girls competing at Chittenango on Saturday afternoon.
In the case of the girls Northstars, it meant yet another victory as, with 114 points, it sailed past a field of 12 challengers as Jamesville-DeWitt (89 points) finished second.
Among the many highlights was a pentathlon duel between CNS star Jasmine Thompson and Cazenovia’s Paige Biviano. Thompson built a big early lead before Biviano nearly made it all up in the final event, the 800-meter run.
The rally fell just short as Thompson, with 2,699 points, beat Biviano by one point. Behind them, Katie Osborne took third place with 2,444 points.
Elsewhere in field events, Casey Wilmer swept the throwing events, tossing the shot put 34 feet 2 1/2 inches and the discus 87 feet to claim both titles. Lindsay Piriano added a second-place triple jump of 32 feet.
Taylor Wendler and Maria Lamontagne both contended in the “Fleet Feet” mile, the meet’s main event. Wendler grabbed third place in 4:59.16 and Lamontagne (5:04.50) took fourth place as Nicole Watterud finished seventh. Fayetteville-Manlius senior Courtney Chapman won in 4:54.10.
In the 2,000-meter steeplechase, Marissa Colburn took third place (7:55.15), with Chelsea Davidson and Jacqlynn Halstead fourth and sixth, respectively. Colburn also got third in the 400-meter dash in 1:04.48.
Jessica Wheeler would emerge with a victory in the 100-meter high hurdles, prevailing in 16.60 seconds, nearly a full second ahead of the field, as she also got third place in the 400-meter hurdles (1:12.13), with Brooke Binion (1:13.18) in fourth.
Binion, Wheeler, Shelby Howell and Sarah Dean took fifth (54.07 seconds) in the 4×100 relay. Nicole Campagna, Katie Laris, Shannon Bausinger and Danielle Ford took fourth in the distance medley relay in 13:38.28.
A day earlier, at the New Hartford Invitational, CNS claimed third place, with 60.66 points. Only Utica Proctor (92 points) and Baldwinsville (67 points) did better.
Eric Munoz earned second place in the triple jump, going 42 feet 11 1/2 inches. Jared Thomson landed in second place in the shot put with 46 feet 2 1/4 inches and also was fourth in the discus (129 feet 11 inches) as Cameron Doray (128 feet 6 inches) was fifth.
Carl Patzer cleared 6 feet to tie for third in the high jump. Mike Hyde and Brendan Ryan tied for fourth in the pole vault, both clearing 11 feet.
Chris Buchanan, Jared Walther, Andrew Johnson and Dan Fritz teamed up to take second in the distance medley relay in 11:00.20, just behind B’ville (10:51.94). Munoz, Mark Broughton, Jared Walther and Ryan Connor finished second (3:40.84) behind West Genesee (3:37.02) in the 1,600 sprint medley.
On his own, Buchanan was third in the 3,200-meter run in 9:46.94, with Eric Hart sixth. CNS also was fourth in the 4×200 relay (1:38.19). Broughton was sixth in the 200-meter dash in 24 seconds flat as Anthony Lupia got sixth in the mile in 4:39.40.
