Staying among the leaders in the OHSL Liberty division, the Cazenovia girls track and field team pulled far away in last Wednesday’s meet against Solvay and Jordan-Elbridge at Earl Hadley Stadium.
The Lakers rolled past the Bearcats 112.33-28.66 and the Eagles 102.5-38.5, and once again Paige Biviano led the way.
In windy conditions, Biviano pulled off a long jump of 14 feet 11 inches and also claimed first place in the 100-meter high hurdles in 16.7 seconds.
Ashley Winn earned a sweep in the sprints, claiming the 100-meter dash in 13.2 seconds and 200-meter dash in 28.3 seconds. In the 4×100 relay, Winn, Piper Gianforte, Jillian Vogl and Audrey Bowers earned a victory in 53.3 seconds.
Hollie Marcelle was active, too. She claimed the 800-meter run (2:37.2) on her own, then teamed with Winn, Laura Fitch and Hollie Marcelle to run the 4×400 relay in 4:32.4. In the 4×800, Marcelle, Emma Wolsey, Michelle Karker and Rae Tobey won in 11:00.2.
In the distance races, Tori Widrick claimed the 1,500-meter run (5:27.2) and Whitney Goris took the 3,000-meter run in 11:07.0. Fitch prevailed in the 400 hurdles in a swift 1:06.1 as Grace Eberle took the discus with a throw of 79 feet 1/4 inch.
Cazenovia’s boys track and field team would lose 85-53 to J-Eand 86-54 to Solvay, though Eric Goldman made a big impression.
Goldman provided the Lakers’ lone wins, going 18 feet 3 inches in the long jump, clearing 5 feet 6 inches in the high jump and prevailing in the triple jump with a leap of 37 feet 7 inches. Solvay’s C.J. Brooks threw the shot put 48 feet 3 inches and the discus 120 feet 4 3/4 inches.
Then the Lakers went a few miles down the road for Saturday’s Chittenango Invitational, which culminated in a breathtaking girls pentathlon duel between Biviano and Cicero-North Syracuse’s Jasmine Thompson.
Thompson built a big lead through three events, but Biviano started to rally with a long jump of 14 feet 9 1/2 inches, then rolled to a time of 2:42.49 in the concluding 800-meter run. That gave Biviano 2,698 points — and
Thompson finished with 2,699, winning by a single point.
Overall, the Lakers earned 37 points for sixth place in the 13-team field, and Winn had a hand in 24 of those points with three runner-up finishes.
On her own, Winn took second (12.99 seconds) to Chittenango’s Courtney Dyer (12.90 seconds) in the 100-meter dash. Winn, Marcelle, Burr and Vogl combined for second in the 1,600 sprint medley in 4:20.68, just behind Fayetteville-Manlius (4:19.62) in the top spot.
And in the 4×100, Winn and Vogl joined Bowers and Rachel Schmidtka as Cazenovia again took second place, in 52.88 seconds, with Jamesville-DeWitt (51.89 seconds) claiming first.
Michellle McGinnis was fourth in the pole vault, clearing 7 feet. Eberle was sixth in the discus, while Molly Woodworth took seventh in the shot put, just missing the points.
Cazenovia’s 10 points on the boys side at the Chittenango meet all came from Pat Dermody winning the unseeded mile race in a time of 4:56.84, just ahead of Westhill’s Mitch Lamb (4:58.14) at the wire.
