Getting an upper hand in a long-time local rivalry, the Westhill boys track and field team would go to Solvay and beat the Bearcats 79-62 last Wednesday, also topping Skaneateles 102-42 to get off to a 2-0 start in the OHSL Liberty division. Solvay beat the Lakers 84.5-56.5. Jeff Law led Westhill along. He went 20 feet in the long jump, won the triple jump by going 38 feet 11 inches and helped the 4×100 relay team prevail in 47.6 seconds. The Warriors also saw Dan Ross, fresh off his state basketball championship heroics, clear 5 feet 10 inches to win the high jump. Kevin Zych took the 3,200-meter run in 10:59.7 as Matt Trendowski needed 24.8 seconds to win the 200-meter dash. Solvay had a fair share of wins, too, including C.J. Brooks throwing the shot put 51 feet 4 inches and the discus 136 feet 9 1/2 inches. Matt Fedrizzi also prevailed twice, following a fast mile of 4:35.7 by winning the 800-meter run in 2:03.6. The Bearcats’ Xander Nappi was first in the 100-meter dash (12.3 seconds) as Jerry Santoferrara cleared 10 feet 6 inches in the pole vault. John Salvagno was first in the 400-meter dash (53.9 seconds) and teamed with Fedrizzi, Matt Morse and Ed Buczakowski to win the 4×400 relay in 3:41.9. In a strong step forward, the Solvay girls track team beat Westhill in a 70-58 decision as part of its three-way meet at Skaneateles. Both sides would lose to the Lakers — the Bearcats 92-48, the Warriors 100-41. Solvay and Westhill both would manage two individual titles. For the Bearcats, Bre Lioto won the 100-meter high hurdles in 18 seconds flat whiel, in the shot put, Nicole Albrigo threw it 26 feet 8 inches. Westhill had Lissa DiPaola run 1,500 meters in a top time of 5:27.5 and Erika Christensen take the 400-meter hurdles in 1:16.1. Skaneateles had double winners in Victoria Sakal (100 and 200 meters), Gabby Eckles (high jump, triple jump) and Grace Van DerVen (long jump, 800 meters). As this went on, Jordan-Elbridge’s boys team was sweeping a meet against Phoenix and Hannibal, toppling the Firebirds 87-54 and the other Warriors 90-50. For the Eagles, Andrew Conlan won both the 100 (11.5 seconds) and 200 (23.8 seconds) sprints, while Mike Marrero ran the mile in 4:51 flat and Cody Stanton needed just 9:51.8 to prevail at 3,200 meters. Andrew Forward won the high jump (5 feet 4 inches) and was second in the triple jump as Carlan Coomey cleared 9 feet 6 inches in the pole vault. Marrero and Coomey teamed with Greg Bader and Nick Burns to run the 4×400 relay in 3:45.4. Burns, Forward, Coomey and Andrew Conlan needed 47.2 seconds to win the 4×100. J-E’s girls team earned a split, beating Hannibal 88-44 but losing to Phoenix 82-59. Phebe Alley was first in the 3,000-meter run (12:19.2), while Rachel Betts sprinted to a 100-meter win in 13.3 seconds. Lisa Kimak cleared 4 feet 6 inches in the high jump, with Rachel Scott taking first in the 400 hurdles in 1:13.9. Betts and Scott combined with Rachel Hare and Kim Foltz to prevail in the 4×400 relay in 4:37.1. All this came after the April 10 Tully Coed Invitational where J-E finished second, with 109 points, to the host Black Knights, who prevailed with 170 points. Bader needed 4:41 to hold off Tully’s Ohure Sam (4:41.7) and win the mile, with Marrero claiming the 3,200 in 10:24.5. The Eagles won both the 4×100 (47.4 seconds) and 4×800 (3:53.8) relays as Forward finished second in both the high jump (5 feet 8 inches) and long jump.
