Bring out your little ones and make that special someone in your life some Valentine’s cookies decorated by you. Each person will decorate 12 cookies baked that morning for participants to bring home. Parents must stay and help their little ones with decorating. This class will be held from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday Feb. 13 at Durgee Junior High School for children ages 4 to 7 years old.
Family ski and snow tubing
Ski for the whole family at an affordable rate from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday Feb. 17 at the Four Seasons Ski Center in Fayetteville. Skiers can rent ski boots and poles and take a one hour lesson at 11:30 a.m., but must pre-register at Lysander Park in advance and inform us you are interested in lessons. Spots fill up fast, so call the Lysander Parks Office at 635-5999.
Come out and join the fun and go snow tubing from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. Thursday Feb. 18 at Four Season Ski Center. Four Season supplies the tubes and pulls you up the hill, you just supply the fun and laughter as you slide down. A good time for kids of all ages. The snow tubing hill is different from the skiing hill to keep you safe and having fun.
Beginner karate
This course covers the fundamentals of karate, while also preparing participants for further study. Training will aid concentration, improve the cardiovascular system, increase coordination, develop muscle tone, teach discipline and encourage over-all mental and physical conditioning. In addition to effective self-defense, students will learn important concepts such as discipline, courtesy, integrity, respect and self-control. Classes include a mix of focused games and serious training to build confidence and self-esteem. Parents are encouraged to join their child and learn together. Goju Ryu will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays from March 3 to April 14 at Palmer Elementary. Tae Kwon Do will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Fridays from Feb. 26 to April 30 at Palmer Elementary. (Ages 6 to adult.)
Advanced Karate
Yellow belts and up will enjoy a deeper study of karate, both in technique and philosophy during this class held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays from March 3 to April 14 at Palmer Elementary. Students will continue their traditional karate studies and be guided to explore new areas including human physiology and Chinese Healing Theory as they apply to health and self-defense. Traditional pressure point techniques will be taught with an emphasis on practical self-defense. Students will additionally cultivate compassion, open-mindedness and personal awareness through their studies and experiences. Classes are Shikaze Ryu affiliated.
Tai Chi
Tai Chi, a Chinese martial art primarily practiced for its health benefits, will be held from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays from March 3 to April 14 at Palmer Elementary. Tai Chi is considered a soft style martial arts, though regular practice provides for an excellent low cardio, toning workout. Tai Chi emphasizes complete relaxation and is essentially taught as a form of meditation in motion. The mind becomes quiet as the body moves to rejuvenate and strengthen itself. Soft, slow, flowing and gentle movements build on the development of balance, coordination and strong energy flow.
Adult karate
This class will begin the journey to the heart of traditional Karate-Do. For those wishing to extend or expand current or past studies and beginners wishing to develop their physical and mental abilities, this program will instill and enhance basic through advanced concepts of martial training and the application of techniques. Studies will focus on the physics of movement, Chi (energy) manipulation and pressure point theory as they apply to health and self-defense. Students can also expect an introduction to Zen philosophy, as it relates to martial arts. Classes, held from 7 to 8 p.m. Fridays from Feb. 26 to April 30 at Palmer Elementary, will be small, focused and Shikaze Ryu affiliated.
Introduction to dance
Be a hit on the dance floor at your next social event, whether it’s a wedding or just out for fun. Learn basic skills including proper styling, poise, lead and follow for ballroom dances including the Fox Trot, Waltz, Cha Cha, Salsa and Polka. A Walt Medicis Dance Studio instructor will conduct the next session of East Coast Swing from 8 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays from Feb. 23 to March 16 at Elden Elementary.
Junior, adult tennis
Taught by Chris Galle and Lisa Pento with Tennis-N-Gear, lessons are for 8- to 13-year-olds and are held Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from March 1 to April 24 at Gold’s Gym in Liverpool. Pre-registration is required to attend this program.
Adult tennis lessons are held from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays from March 3 to April 17 at Gold’s Gym in Liverpool.
