For the second time in as many Fridays, the West Genesee boys swim team took the best shot of a highly-regarded opponent – and still came out on top.
In this case, the Wildcats did its winning work at Mexico, becoming the first Section III team to beat the Tigers in two years during a 102-84 decision.
With so much talent on hand, it was little surprise that the two sides would combine for 11 personal-best times during the meet.
This was capped by Ben Seketa’s work in the 100-yard breaststroke. Seketa posted a time of 1:00.62, setting a Mexico pool record in the process. Seketa had already beaten Tigers star Mike Hartwell, 1:46.85 to 1:48.45, in the 200 freestyle with his best time of the season in that event.
The main component of WG’s victory was its sweep of the three relays, starting in the 200 medley, where Seketa, Pat O’Donnell, Kevin Taylor and Pat Guy finished in a time of 1:45.25, 1.6 seconds better than Mexico.
Later, in the 200 freestyle relay, O’Donnell joined Carson Elias, Connor Agen and Tyler Olson as the Wildcats, in 1:33.83, held off Mexico (1:34.45) to win. And in the closing 400 freestyle relay, Olson, Elias, Seketa and Taylor prevailed in 3:25.96 as the Tigers (3:27.72) again finished second.
Olson won the 50 freestyle in 23.10 seconds, the best 50 free of his career, and took second in the 100 freestyle, while O’Donnell beat the field in the 100 backstroke in 56.83 seconds. Elias needed 54.44 seconds (another top personal mark) to prevail in the 100 butterfly.
WG heads back on the road Thursday night to face Baldwinsville.
