Marcellus, J-E win volleyball matches

Both the Marcellus and Jordan-Elbridge girls volleyball teams put together victories last Tuesday night during showdowns against local rivals.

The Mustangs hosted Solvay and maintained its recent preeminence in this long feud, sweeping past the Bearcats 25-15, 25-20, 25-20.

Samantha Vulcano finished with 18 assists, the passes going to several different players. Nicole Fletcher and Becca Eddy each had five kills, with Fletcher adding three kills and Eddy four assists. Devan Landers had four kills and four blocks as Sara Ryan finished with three kills and three aces.

On Solvay’s side, Calla Bakowski finished with 15 assists, with Alexa Bresett earning five kills, Kelsey Francemone four blocks and Bre Lioto four kills and three blocks. Cassidy Tanzella had a season-best eight blocks.

Meanwhile, J-E swept Westhill, winning the first game 25-17, then surviving challenges from the Warriors each of the next two games, winning them by equal 26-24 margins.

On the Eagles’ side, Lindsy Geery had five assists and two aces, while Jenna Shorkey gained four kills and Lisa Kimak added three blocks. Westhill saw Courtney Morgan earn nine and Mackenzie O’Brien five kills, all while Elvera Sgroi had 22 assists, four aces and four kills.
