Both the Vernon Verona Sherrill and Chittenango girls basketball teams would try to find some kind of momentum during holiday tournament week. VVS went to the Madison Tournament and dominated its opening-round game against Morrisville-Eaton, beating the Warriors 49-27. Exploiting the Warriors’ zone defense, Tracee Scheibel had 10 of her season-high 20 points in the first quarter, pushing the Red Devils to an 18-6 lead. By halftime, the margin had grown to 31-15, and though M-E settled down a bit, it would not catch up. Leanne Doolen, with 10 points, and Megan Reed, with nine points, offered Scheibel lots of support. For M-E, Sami Leamer had eight points, with Abby Clark (seven points) and Leigha Morris (six points) close behind. The final pitted VVS against host Madison. Despite a rough beginning, the Red Devils would take charge and beat the Blue Devils 52-28. Madison scored the game’s first eight points, but VVS would quickly recover. It only allowed two points the rest of the half, surged ahead 16-10, and spent the entire second half adding to that margin, nearly doubling the Blue Devils’ output by the time it was done. Scheibel put together a double-double of 12 points and 13 rebounds, easily garnering tournament MVP honors. Courtney Smith contributed 10 points, while Erin Curtis, with seven points and seven rebounds, joined Scheibel on the all-tournament team. Chelsea Ghent emerged with seven points and a career-best 10 rebounds. Earlier in the week, Chittenango played in the Fabius-Pompey Tournament, taking a 47-40 loss to Solvay in last Monday’s opening round. It was close throughout the first half, Chittenango only trailing 26-21 at the break. But the Bearcats’ defense cranked up in the third quarter and held the Bears without a single point, extending the deficit to 36-21 in the process. To its credit, the Bears made a spirited late comeback, only to fall short. Alanna Haines finished with 13 points, while Haley Landers got 11 points. Kaitlin Antelmi added seven points. For Solvay, Tessa Pucello had 12 points and Abbey Jones added 10 points. Forced into the consolation game Tuesday against Cato-Meridian, the Bears would recover and prevail over the Blue Devils 34-22, using a 14-7 first-quarter to seize the lead and never look back. Haines overcame some prolonged slumps to lead both sides with 11 points, with Landers adding eight points as the Bears improved to 2-6.
