The Cazenovia girls indoor track and field team rose up to second place during last Friday night’s Mohawk Valley Indoor Track Association meet at Colgate University.
Overall, the Lakers had 54 points, beating everyone except Rome Free Academy, who won with 64 points.
Cazenovia’s lone victory came in the 4×200 relay, where Katie Kleine, Jillian Vogl, Katie Woodworth and Audrey Bowers posted a time of 1:56.04, nearly six seconds ahead of runner-up RFA.
Jackie O’Sullivan, Meaghan Liddell, Hollie Marcelle and Rachel Grimm combined to take second in the 4×800 relay in 11:04.98, while Piper Gianforte and Michelle McGinnis got second (14 feet 6 inches) in the pole vault. Molly Woodworth and Christy Tainter were second in the shot put with combined tosses of 52 feet 2 1/2 inches.
Also, the Lakers were third in both the mile and 55-meter hurdles (20.49), where Paige Biviano had the top individual time of 9.29 seconds. Laura Fitch and Alaina Kelehan were fourth in the high jump.
In the boys MVITA meet, Cazenovia was seventh out of 11 teams, with 21 points. John Stoker and Dylan Muller teamed up to win the pole vault, combining to clear 16 feet, while Forest Blanchard and Xavier Coates got second in the high jump (9 feet 9 inches). Matt Donovan and Brett Axelson were fifth in the long jump as Axelson, Coates, Muller and Dylan Bender took fifth in the 4×200 relay in 1:46.18.
Four days later, in the second MVITA meet, Cazenovia’s girls had 28.5 points to grab fourth place as RFA (71 points) again went to the top.
Again, Gianforte and McGinnis joined ranks in the pole vault, and again cleared 14 feet 6 inches — only this time it put them in first place, well clear of RFA (11 feet) and everyone else. Woodworth and Tainter were third in the shot put (49 feet 11 inches) and Cazenovia also got third (15:05.79) in the distance medley relay.
Over on the boys side, where the Lakers gained 18.5 points for eighth place, Donovan, Bender, Axelson and Muller won the 4×200 in a time of 1:43.40, outlasting West Canada Valley (1:44.12) and the rest of the field. Stoker and Muller again cleared 16 feet for second place in the pole vault.
