As the Liverpool wrestling team tried to topple its neighbors from Baldwinsville last Tuesday night at the Baker High School gym, it found a lot of success early.
However, the Bees would turn it around in the middle of the meet and win everything down the stretch, forcing the Warriors to a 43-21 defeat.
Derek Eason opened things at 152 pounds with a hard-fought 3-2 win over Joe Senf. After Ryan Bragon (160 pounds) dropped a 13-10 defeat to Auggie Zona, Liverpool resumed its early push.
Brendan Capria, at 171 pounds, claimed a forfeit, and Joe Pizzuto won at 189 pounds, taking out Patrick Nasoni 12-6 before Mike Reed (215 pounds) pinned Jacob Florack in 3:39.
Two matches later, at 103 pounds, Casey Guilfoil topped Joey Shaheen 11-6 — and that would be the last Liverpool victory. B’ville won each of the remaining six matches, five by pin, plus Mende Cukalevski (145pounds) losing to Kurt McArdell 10-2.
But the Warriors would turn it around in Thursday’s meet against Auburn, rolling to a 55-13 victory over the Maroons.
Each of the first four matches went the Warriors’ way, starting with Derek Eason pinning Kenny Currier in 1:02. Then Capria routed Matt Tehan 16-2, Pizzuto got past Dom Colella 6-1 and Reed took just 50 seconds to pin Matt Mattes.
Guilfoil went to 112 pounds and earned a forfeit, but Tyler Eason (125 pounds) did wrestle and pinned Joe Giancona in 1:27, the first of four consecutive Liverpool falls.
Tyler Koleasook (130 pounds) finished off Nick Campagnola in 1:36, after which Emir Hulic (135 pounds) got his pin over Devin O’Grady midway through the third period and Dakota Inman (140 pounds) pinned Tom Campagnola in 3:36. Cukalveski closed the meet with a 27-second pin of Kyle Hunt.
