Nothing seems to be getting in the way of the Baldwinsville girls volleyball team and yet another Section III Class AA title.
The Bees are headed to the championship match after last Tuesday night’s three-game sweep of Cicero-North Syracuse in last Tuesday’s AA semifinal at the Baker High School gym.
B’ville will face Liverpool in this Wednesday’s championship match at CNS. The Warriors needed five long games to outlast Oswego in the other semifinal.
Going into the semifinal, B’ville had established complete supremacy over the AA field. Not only was it undefeated, but the Bees had not even lost a single game in 16 matches, a streak that added up to 48 games.
CNS hoped to change all that, and got to an encouraging start in the opening game, working to an 11-11 tie and forcing a B’ville time-out.
Whatever head coach Mary Jo Cerqua told her team seemed to work, for B’ville went on a 14-1 blitz the rest of the game to win it, 25-12. Libero Carrie Hack, in addition to her terrific defensive work, got the last six points on her jump serve.
Though the second game proved closer, B’ville stayed in control and won it, 25-20, and the third game proved more lopsided as, by a 25-16 margin, the Bees stayed perfect.
Hack finished with four aces, setting a tone as Paulina Rein earned 10 kills on the front line. Next to her, Lauren McVey and Jenna Blujus each had eight kills, with Blujus adding seven assists, helping Breanna Stewart on the back line as she got 22 assists. In defeat, CNS saw Meghan Ross get 10 assists, with Deanna Zbikowski and Danielle Rawda each getting five kills.
