Before Vernon Verona Sherrill hosts the annual Tri-Valley League cross country championships next Tuesday, both the Red Devils and the Oneida runners got more chances to compete against league foes head-to-head.
The Red Devils had full control over Camden in last Tuesday’s head-to-head meet, beating the Blue Devils 17-46 on the girls side and 20-41 on the boys side.
VVS snagged the top three spots in the girls race, led by Kerry Miley, who won the individual race in 22 minutes flat.
Casey Kane took second place, in 22:42, while Becky Talbot claimed third place in 23:11. Brittany Fort was fifth (24:02) and Brooke Waite (24:16) rounded out the scoring column.
As for the boys Red Devils, it had a photo finish between Seth MacDonald and Nate Feherty, with MacDonald prevailing as both crossed the line in 18 minutes, 31 seconds. Adam Literio helped out with a fourth-place clocking of 19:35.
Oneida, for its part, earned a split of its three-way girls meet at Whitesboro, edging past Clinton 27-31, but losing to the hosts 25-31. Erin Durdan was second, in a time of 22:57, behind Whitesboro’s Katie Day (21:04), but she was the only Indians runner in the top six.
In the boys meet, Oneida lost a close decision to Clinton, 26-30, and fell to Whitesboro 24-37, though the Indians’ Connor McCarthy won the individual race in a time of 18:07. Joe Casella nabbed fourth place in 19:02.
All this followed McCarthy winning the Large School division race at the Oct. 10 Tully Invitational, his time of 17:26.6 enough to beat the field by more than 10 seconds. Oneida was sixth in the team standings, as Casella ran to 16th place in 18:31.2.
