While the Christian Brothers Academy girls swim team knew it was good, perhaps it didn’t know just how good until Sunday afternoon’s meet against Pittsford.

Against the top team in the state, not to mention an opponent that hadn’t lost a meet in 12 years, the Brothers pulled out an 84-82 victory and extended its own meet win streak to 14.

A key, in the early going, was winning races to gain crucial points. Maggie Fletcher and Juliette Wetzel did so with two wins apiece.

Fletcher swam the 200 freestyle in 2:01.15, then produced a win in the 100 backstroke in 1:02.11. Wetzel swept the sprints, going from the 50 freestyle (26.13 seconds) to a victory in the 100 freestyle in 57.09 seconds.

Right away, CBA got in the win column as Fletcher, Summer Schmitt, Destiny Cerlanek and Kathryn Coughlin claimed the 200 medley relay in a swift time of 1:53.23.

Schmitt, on her own, edged Pittsford’s Sarah Dempsey to win the 100 butterfly, 1:01.00 to 1:01.18, and was second to Fletcher in the 100 backstroke. Coughlin earned another crucial win late in the meet when she swam the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.58.

Ruthie Speidel, second in the 200 freestyle to Fletcher, won the 500 freestyle in 5:22.01, with Cerlanek in third place. Emily Wanamaker (175.30 points) and Marisa Hamel (167.70 points) were second and third, respectively, in diving.

Still, the whole meet hinged on the 400 freestyle relay, especially since Pittsford had won the 200 freestyle relay (1:43.41) despite Coughlin, Wetzel, Michelle Damico and Aubrey Letourneau posting a time of 1:44.73.

Pittsford won the 400 free relay in 3:45.39. But since CBA took second (3:47.59) and third (3:51.23) ahead of Pittsford’s other relay quartet, it got the points necessary to hang on and win. Wetzel, Letourneau, Schmitt, Fletcher, Speidel, Cerlanek, Zoe McCauley and Kara Peters swam relay legs.
