Each side had its distinct advantage when the West Genesee and Marcellus girls tennis teams met each other on Wednesday to begin the 2009 season.
However, because there were more doubles matches on the slate, the Wildcats finished in front, edging past the Mustangs 4-3.
Marcellus dominated on the singles side. Suzanne Swierczek got past Maranda Dowling 6-4, 6-3, while Catie Nonemacher swept Christine Flask 6-3, 6-4. In three sets, Kate McCarthy defeated Mackenzie Payne 6-2, 6-7 (7-5), 6-3.
WG turned it around on the doubles side, starting with Anisha Shetty and Lexie Myers getting a 6-1, 6-2 sweep of Linda Annan and Emily Gascon.
Sara Polge and Allie Theberge topped Holly Grosholz and Nicolette Nugent 6-0, 6-4, with Jessica Bliss and Nicole Bleko holding off Colleen Stapleton and Leah May 6-2, 6-4. Alexa Rahrle and Karin Gaspirini gave WG the fourth point, beating Renee Poulott and Emily Hennigan by scores of 6-1 and 6-3.
In its CNY Counties League opener on Thursday, the Wildcats met Auburn and won again by the same 4-3 margin, though this time it did grab a singles point.
Flask, earning her first win of the season, needed three sets to fight past Palak Patel 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, as Dowling and Payne both took defeats.
Shetty and Myers began the doubles push, beating Aiswarya Irri and Hanora Barron 6-2, 6-1. Bliss and Bleko were just as good in a 6-2, 6-0 sweep of Jamie Bruno and Courtney Divito, while Theberge and Polge earned a win over Angela Debenedetto and Christina Granato 6-4, 6-3. Gasparini and Rarhle lost in straight sets.
