Both of Baldwinsville’s track and field teams would have a large presence at last week’s Section III state qualifying meets at Cicero-North Syracuse’s Bragman Stadium — where the state championships will take place this Friday and Saturday.
Cathleen Green will be at the state meet. This came after she won last Thursday’s girls long jump in convincing fashion. Green’s leap of 17 feet 6 inches beat Liverpool’s Armani Moore (16 feet 6 3/4 inches) by nearly a foot.
Laura Farnham earned second in the Division I pentathlon, earning 2,656 points as CNS’s Jasmine Thompson (2,816 points) prevailed.
Danae Polsin ran to third in the 3,000-meter event in a time of 10:42.11. Miranda Nicoletti contended in the Division I shot put, finishing fourth as she tossed it 34 feet 4 1/4 inches.
Briana Pollard was fourth in the 200-meter dash (26.93 seconds) and fifth (12.99 seconds) in the 100-meter dash, with Jaime Balloni seventh in the 400-meter dash as Balloni, Nicole Fecco, M.C. Cunningham and Kylie Mosher got sixth in the 4×400 relay.
When the boys team took its turn in the state qualifier on Saturday, sophomore Shaun Thompson raced to another win in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Repeating his sectional Class AA effort, Thompson was the lone runner among 21 in the field to break 10 minutes, winning in a time of 9:50.34, more than half a minute ahead of Mexico’s Mike Hartwell (10:21.87). Joel Moss was fourth, in 10:30.89, while Andres Romeu (10:51.99) finished eighth.
Brian Kane earned the Bees’ other win, in the high jump. Kane cleared 6 feet 2 inches, doing so with fewer misses than Corcoran’s Laquan Rouse to finish on top.
Sean Bernstein ran to second in the 100-meter dash, finishing in 11.05 seconds as Rome Free Academy’s Anthony DeJean (10.78 seconds) prevailed. In the 200, Bernstein, in 22.72 seconds, again took second — and again, DeJean (22.39 seconds) beat him.
In the 3,200-meter run, Adam Pacheck earned second place in 9:50.92, behind only CNS’s Chris Buchanan (9:43.48), with Nate McCabe third in 9:56.13.
Tim Chambers claimed sixth in the 800-meter run (2:02.06), Kyle McCaleb was sixth in the 110-meter high hurdles in 16.25 seconds and ninth (1:03.29) in the 400 hurdles. Matt Getman was seventh in the discus, tossing it 114 feet 7 inches.
