With a long string of victories, the Christian Brothers Academy girls track and field team pulled far away from the field in Thursday’s Section III Class B-2 championship meet at Canastota High School.
All told, the Brothers had 174 points, well clear of Lowville, who was second with 100.5 points. Ilion was third with 75 points.
Melissa Zajdel’s sweep of the sprints included a time of 12.3 seconds in the 100-meter dash, a win in the 200-meter dash (25.2 seconds) and a 58-second tear through the 400-meter dash. Ashley Letteney was second in the 400 (1:04.1), with Nadine Dosa third in both the 100 (13.5 seconds) and 200 (27.9 seconds) for support.
Katie Brislin, in the 800-meter run, led a 1-2-3 sweep. Brislin’s time of 2:22.7 held off Rachel Zajdel (2:23.4) as Carol Giblin took third in 2:23.7.
In the 1,500-meter run, Brislin was second (4:52.4), right behind Canastota star Allison Lasnicki (4:51.4) as Gibling took third and Rachel Zajdel fourth. Michaela Gildemeyer was second in the 3,000-meter run (11:45.3) behind Lasnicki.
Ellen Voorheis ran to victory in the 2,000-meter steeplechase in 8:30.9, with Gildemeyer third and Julia Quigley fourth. Nicole SanGiacomo went to second in the 100-meter high hurdles in 16.9 seconds as Quigley got fourth in the 400 hurdles (1:13.7) and Cara Peters finished fifth.
Natalie Sportelli earned 2,020 points to win the five-event pentathlon. Giblin, Brislin, Letteney and Rachel Zajdel won the 4×800 relay (10:22.1) as CBA also took the 4×100 relay in 50.7 seconds.
Betty Etheredge contributed fourth-place finishes in both the long jump (15 feet 2 1/2 inches) and triple jump (31 feet 4 3/4 inches), with Edie Douglas fifth in the pole vault.
