During an active spring break, the Skaneateles boys lacrosse team would find itself tested by three distinct opponents in a span of five days — and it conquered every one of them.

For the first act, the Lakers went to Westhill last Tuesday and survived its own long drought to scrape out a 4-3 victory over the Warriors.

All of the Lakers’ goals came in the first half, when Nathan Hunt, Kevin Castle, Kevin Rice and Dylan Ross each took turns scoring, with Kelly Donigan adding an assist.

But that dried up in the second half as Skaneateles could not hold on to the ball and was forced into a constant defensive mode. Westhill had all kinds of time to make up a three-goal deficit.

Still, the Lakers held on, giving up just one goal in each of the last two periods. Defenders like Lex Johnson, Lucas Sherman and Kyle McQuiggan frustrated Westhill’s attackers, and goalie Cal Winkleman stood up, too, recording 11 saves.

Without much time to rest, the Lakers visited defending Class B champion Carthage on Thursday night and had quite an impressive performance, leading from the start and handling the Comets 11-5.

By winning face-offs, Skaneateles was able to dictate the game’s pace and use long, patient possessions to set up just the right scoring opportunities. It also kept the ball out of Carthage’s sticks, leading to a first-quarter shutout and a 5-1 halftime advantage.

The trend continued well into the second half, as Skaneateles built up the margin to 9-2, by which time the Comets’ attempts to rally proved futile.

Hunt went to the front of the attack, scoring four times. Donigan, Rice and Tom Schoener each had two goals, with Schoener adding a pair of assists as Baier also converted. Patrick Emmer gained two assists, with Castle and Paul O’Donnell getting one assist apiece. Winkleman stopped 11 of the 16 shots he faced.

Even with all the great stuff it had done during this stretch, Sknaeateles may have saved its best work for Saturday’s 8-0 win over Cazenovia, a rare shutout in the lacrosse annals.

What made this more impressive was the fact that Cazenovia had started 3-0, two of them overtime wins, and a consensus was building that those other Lakers had a chance to make the Class C powers sweat.

Well, at least that was the case for a short while on Saturday before Skaneateles took charge with a four-goal second-quarter outburst to make it 5-0.

Soon enough, the only suspense centered around whether the shutout could be attained. Led again by Johnson, Sherman and McQuiggan, the back line held up, and Winkleman sparkled, frustrating Cazenovia forwards by stopping each of the 15 shots he faced.

Baier worked his way to a three-goal hat trick, adding an assist, as Donigan scored twice. Hunt, Schoener and Jeff Hingman each had one goal, with Emmer adding an assist.

Following yet another trip — to Jordan-Elbridge on Tuesday — the Lakers make it home late this week for games against CBA and Onondaga.
