At Tuesday night’s meeting, the Oneida common council voted down a proposal to spend $22,700 to design a five-bay garage for the police department, part of the proposed plans for the city’s Justice Center.
Councilors Dan Jones, Don Moore, Mike Murawski and Max Smith voted no on the proposal with councilors Marcia Rafte and Rob Brown voting yes.
When the garage addition was first introduced at the Feb. 17 meeting, police chief Dave Meeker said it was not safe to keep the cars outside, as the department does now. He said officers have to take the time to brush off and warm up the cars, time that could be important when responding to an emergency. He also noted that there have been incidents of vandalism to police vehicles.
The council did vote to spend $123,900 for the design of the rest of the Justice center and to award Barton & Loguidice the contract. The engineering firm worked with JCM Architectural Associates to create the preliminary blueprints presented Feb. 17. To see those plans, see cnylink.com.
Mayor Peter Hedglon said the total project would cost around $1.3 million.
The council also:
Authorized the purchasing agent to advertise for bid for liquid iron salts for the Waste Water Treatement Plant and for sidewalk replacement
Canvassed bid for asbestos abatement at 106 N. Warner Street and authorized city engineer Jim Bacher to spend up to $39,000 and also granted AECOM Environment the contract for project management, inspection and air monitoring at a cost of $10,480.
Scheduled two public hearings regarding street reconstruction. The council will hear public comments on the Shattuck Avenue and West Sands Street projects at 7 p.m. April 7.
Canvassed bids for tree and stump removal and authorized Jim Bacher to spend $21,905.
