Just in time, the West Genesee ice hockey team pulled out of what had become a prolonged offensive slump. More importantly, when the Wildcats beat Auburn 8-1 last Tuesday night at Shove Park on Senior Night, the Wildcats clinched the Division I regular-season championship, holding off a late charge from Baldwinsville. A string of four games where WG had gone 0-2-2, losing to both Ithaca and Oswego, had Wildcat fans nervous and had left the door ajar for B’ville should things really go wrong. However, WG (who beat B’ville twice in the regular season) found relief in the form of a 3-20 Auburn squad that would put up little resistance. In the first period alone, the Wildcats pestered the Maroons for five goals — more than in the previous four games combined, and that decided matters early. Zach Lewis, with a goal and three assists, set up plays, as did Brady Fremont, Erich Haney and Adam King, each of whom had two assists. D.J. Mazzoni and Ryan McConnell each found the net twice, with Lewis, Fremont, Haney and Chris MacRae each scoring, too. Casey Schattner and Ryan Michel each had one assist.
