Just when the Liverpool boys basketball team looked like it would get a big momentum boost at the end of the regular season, it got snatched away. Corcoran came into the Warriors’ home gym Tuesday night and, with a big fourth-quarter rally, stunned Liverpool 67-62. They played through a tight first quarter, but the Warriors’ offense erupted in the second period as it outscored the Cougars 24-10 to go out in front. Hot as Liverpool was there, it went cold in the third quarter, getting just seven points. That gave Corcoran time to regroup and get back in the game before a final period where it put up 29 points to run over the Warriors. Before it all fell apart, Jesse Gates finished with 23 points, while Matt Harrington and Anthony Salomone each got nine points. Cam Jones added eight points. Six Corcoran players had six or more points, with Mike Stenson (13 points), Riley Stroman (12 points) and Algeron Torrence (10 points) leading the way. As this was going on, A long season of growth and learning for the Liverpool girls basketball team ended in the most difficult way possible. All the Warriors did was go to face defending Section III Class AA champion Corcoran and hang in for a while before taking a 66-44 loss to the Cougars. Liverpool (6-14) played a solid first quarter, only trailing by four, 16-12, before Corcoran used a 19-5 domination of the second quarter to get clear. Battling to the end, the Warriors played on even terms in the second half, as Nina Tassone got nine points to lead the way. Chrissy Scalisi (eight points), Cara Scalisi (seven points) and Ally Zywicki (six points) were close behind. Corcoran had four players reach double figures. Carrie Blunt and Ayana Bradley each had 14 points, while Nadia Jackson added 12 points and Irene Hudson put up 11 points. Each Liverpool teams finds out Sunday where they go for the Class AA playoffs.
